Seven candidates have filed to run in the upcoming Sioux City School Board election in November.

Christian Supiot Perez told Siouxland Public Media on Thursday that he is running to expand the district’s bilingual program beyond ESL students to benefit all students.

Supiot’s priorities include improving communication from the board and creating new ways to recruit new teachers and staff from outside district boundaries.

He currently works as the transfer navigator at Western Iowa Tech Community College and previously taught at the University of South Dakota.

There are three Sioux City School Board members who have expiring terms at the end of this year. Bobby Michaelson, Jan George, and Dan Greenwell are running for reelection.

Other candidates include Jebediah Hibbs, A.J. Cecil-Starlin and Cyndi Hanson.

Hanson has been a college administrator in the metro area for many years.

Hanson, Cecil-Starlin and Supiot all announced or filed papers for their candidacies on Thursday.

The filing period for school board, city council, and mayor candidates in Iowa closed at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

The election is November 4 for this and other school board contests, plus Iowa municipal contests such as for city council members and mayors.
