The South Dakota Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has announced the cancellation of its annual Latino Festival and Parade, originally scheduled for September 17th in Sioux Falls.
The decision comes in response to recent partnerships between the governor's office, local law enforcement, and state agencies with Immigration and Customs Enforcement aimed at strengthening immigration enforcement.
Selene Zamorano, CEO of the South Dakota Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, told South Dakota Public Broadcasting, that the Latino community is feeling afraid.
Zamorano said the chamber struggled with canceling the events and wasn’t sure how to celebrate under stricter immigration enforcement, fears of racial profiling, and rising discrimination.
According to their website the festival and parade celebrates Latino culture and pride, uplifting and bringing visibility to the Latino community in South Dakota.
Although the public festivities are canceled, the chamber is committed to finding a way to celebrate their community, culture, and support Latino businesses.
