Temperatures across Iowa are expected to be in the 90s – even 100s – this week, and health providers are warning people to take precautions.
Hans House is a professor in the department of emergency medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
He says people who are the most vulnerable to heat stroke are the very young, the very old – and those on certain medications.
House says signs of heat stroke include people who are hot, but aren’t sweating and are showing signs of an altered mental state like confusion.
The Sioux City Council Monday approved an application to the Iowa Finance Authority for a $50,000 grant. It will provide street outreach to the homeless.
Each year, the city is required to hold "listening sessions" with local nonprofit organizations before Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership funds are released. During such meetings, homelessness is often a major identified concern.
A dozen Republican presidential candidates have agreed to have Governor Kim Reynolds interview them at the Iowa State Fair.
Reynolds is calling the 12 separate interviews “Fair Side Chats.” Former President Donald Trump has not accepted the governor’s invitation to join her on the fairgrounds, but the news release announcing the schedule indicated it is subject to change.
Last week, the governor told reporters at the statehouse she plans keep the questions consistent rather than tailored to each candidate. Her staff has set up a website, so Iowans can submit questions, too.
The Iowa Department of Transportation is releasing its new edition of the Iowa Bike Map the same week tens of thousands of cycling enthusiasts are in the state for RAGBRAI.
The Iowa DOT says officials hope some of those out-of-state visitors will pick up a free bike map and make plans for a return trip. The state ordered 150,000 bike maps this year. They are available at all welcome centers, interstate rest areas, and by visiting iowadot.gov/iowabikes.
The maps display hundreds of miles of multiuse trails, as well as a summary of Iowa bicycling laws, and bike safety tips. They also include trail maps of the state’s largest cities, and something new this year that helps cyclists choose the routes that best suit their level of riding experience.
