Newscast 02.07.23: IA House approves 1.7 million dollar increase in school funding; Hawkeyes to play at Wrigley Field

Public School Review

The Iowa House has passed, and Governor Kim Reynolds is expected to sign, a three percent increase in state aid to public schools. it’s the largest percentage increase since 2015.

The bill would provide around 107 million dollars in new funding for K-12 public schools putting state aid at a total of about 3.7 billion dollars.

It also adds nearly one million dollars to help schools with higher than average transportation costs.

Democrats failed to advance an amendment for a much larger school funding increase. They say that even at 3 percent, some schools will have to cut positions or programs to manage rising costs for everything from fuel to health insurance.

The Sioux City Council unanimously voted yesterday to award a lease agreement to the Hesse Foundation for the rental of Riverside Recreational Sports Complex.

The Sioux City Journal reports that the nonprofit organization, which is affiliated with the Arena Sports Academy, is currently renting Long Lines Family Rec Center's second floor from the city, but the facility's climbing wall and party room are not included in the lease.

Sioux City Parks and Recreation Director Matt Salvatore said the lease contains language that says that the Hesse Foundation agrees to sublease to Westside Little League Monday through Thursday during the summer for softball games, subject to the availability of the fields based on scheduled activities and appropriate insurance.

Iowa's football team will play a game at one of America's most iconic sports venues this fall.

KCCI-TV in Des Moines reports that the Hawkeyes' Nov. 4 game against Northwestern will be played at Wrigley Field in Chicago, the third "Wildcats Classic'' to be played in the home of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa's first-ever game at the facility.

Northwestern and the Cubs announced this morning that the Big Ten game originally scheduled to be played at Ryan Field in Evanston would be played instead at Wrigley Field.

The Wildcats previously took the field at the Friendly Confines in 2021, hosting Purdue, and in 2010 when it met Illinois there in the first college football game to be played at Wrigley Field since 1938.
