Co-Founder of Sioux City's March for Our Lives Works to Bring Awareness and Solutions for School Violence

Dominic Eastman

One of the co-founders of Sioux City’s chapter of March for Our Lives says the deadly shooting at an elementary school in Texas was sadly not a shocking tragedy.

“No one’s jaw really fell, unfortunately, it’s scary how everything is playing out.”

Activist Dominic Eastman, a soon-to-be graduate of East High School, started the local organization as a freshman. March for Our Lives brings awareness about gun violence and was launched after a student-led demonstration in Washington, D.C., after a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, in February of 2018.

The local March for Our Lives provides gun locks and heightened awareness of the issue of gun violence.

“It’s small things. We are trying to do what we can.”

Eastman, who also serves as a liaison to the Sioux City Community School Board, mirrored comments made by Sioux City Superintendent of schools Paul Gausman, If you see something, say something.

“As in many of these incidents, there are red flags and signs.”

“Mental health is also a major concern.”

As Eastman heads to the University of Iowa in the fall, he plans to continue his work to improve society by studying political science and public policy. He believes change starts at the ballot box and through community support.
