The Iowa Senate approved a bill yesterday that grants underage individuals immunity from certain alcohol-related crimes when they call for emergency help. Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.
80700Alcohol Bill :38
Senate File 415 is aimed at college students under age 21 who need to call 911 for help because a friend has drunk too much and is in trouble.
The bill directs the Iowa Board of Regents to prevent state universities from imposing disciplinary sanctions against students for possessing or consuming alcohol, if the student is immune from prosecution under the legislation. Those include removal from a course, enrollment restrictions in a course or program, and suspension or expulsion from the university, or eviction from student housing. The legislation also provides immunity for the person for whom help is sought.
