Rural Lawyers Wanted in Nebraska and South Dakota

The struggle to recruit attorneys to rural areas is still a problem despite the efforts of most Plains’ states.  Nebraska and South Dakota are hoping for better results with a relatively new program.  Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has more.

The Rural Law Opportunities Program offers high-achieving high school students full-tuition undergraduate scholarships to three rural Nebraska colleges. The Program organizer hopes the rate of return will be as high as the 60 percent reported by a similar program to get doctors into small towns.

Those who maintain a 3.5 GPA and get a minimum law school entry test score are automatically accepted to the University of Nebraska College of Law.  South Dakota has initiated called the Rural Attorney Recruitment Program. It provides qualifying attorneys an incentive payment in return for five (5) continuous years of practice in an eligible rural county.  For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
