Columbus Day

Monday is Columbus Day in Iowa.  However, South Dakota is one of a growing number of states that have turned the holiday on its ear.  Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

“Columbus sailed the blue in 1492” was a refrain long heard in American schools on the second Monday in October.  However, the explorer’s reputation has suffered as the facts about his ill-treatment of native peoples in the West Indies have become commonly known. So South Dakota now observes Native American Day; the state of Vermont and the city of Phoenix observe Indigenous Peoples' Day.

It’s still a day off for federal government workers and that includes the postal service. In Iowa, it will be business as usual for state, county and city officials.
