A teenager has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the shooting death of a woman at a New Year’s Eve party in Sioux City. Eighteen year old Anthony Bauer of Sioux City, was sentenced this morning after he plead guilty in June to second-degree murder, according to television station KTIV. In his plea, Bauer admitted that he and others fired several shots into a home where people were gathered for a New Year’s Eve party, killing 18-year-old Mia Kritis and wounding three others.
In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped Bauer's original charge of first-degree murder. Under the plea deal, Bauer must serve 35 years in prison before he is eligible for parole. Bauer was one of four people charged in the shooting.
An air quality alert has been issued for most of Iowa today as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifts south, bringing high, unhealthy air particulates with it. The air quality index shows the state’s air is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including those with asthma and heart and lung diseases. Children and older residents could also be affected. Iowa health officials say residents should stay inside as much as possible and limit physical activities outdoors. Residents are also advised to keep windows closed and air conditioning on. The alert is in effect until late this afternoon.
Unity in The Community will hold its annual block party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Cook Park.
This year's event will celebrate the fifth anniversary the organization and the impact that it's had on building community relationships between law enforcement and citizens. The block party will feature free food, giveaways and an opportunity to "dunk" a police officer in a dunk tank.
