A few Democratic hopefuls for president plan to stop in Sioux City over the next couple of days.
New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will appear at the Key Club on 4th Street tonight at 6:30.
She plans to discuss her vision for American.
Then tomorrow night California Senator Kamala Harris plans to hold a rally at the Anderson Dance Pavilion.
Harris is on a five-day river-to-river bus tour across the state of Iowa.
Also, on Thursday night former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper will attend a private event at the Truman Club in Sioux City.
A former Winnebago Tribal Council member has been given probation for his role in the theft of funds from WinneVegas Casino.
Travis Mallory was sentenced this week in U.S. District Court in Omaha to three years of probation.
He did enter a guilty plea in March to one count of theft of funds belonging to an Indian gaming establishment.
Mallory is one of nine former council members who were accused of a conspiracy to siphon more than $327,000 from the WinnaVegas Casino Resort in Sloan, Iowa.
Charges against two of them were dismissed.
Sioux City teens are working to prevent suicide and bringing awareness to the community. SPM’s Mae Macfarlane reports this new organization.
You Matter Siouxland launched a campaign yesterday leading up to Suicide Awareness month in September. The group took to Facebook, selling yard signs that promote healthy mental mantras, including the phrase “you are worthy of love.”
The organization quickly sold out of yard signs but are currently printing more.
You Matter Siouxland is working with students from the local high schools to educate peers about suicide awareness and prevention.
The CDC reports suicide is the third leading cause of death for people age 15 to 24 is suicide behind accidents and homicide.
