Check It Out: The Love Haters by Katherine Center

This is Billie Voss with the Sioux City Public Library and you’re listening to Check It Out.

Author Katherine Center is a favorite among many staff here at the Sioux City Public Library and today, I am recommending her latest book, “The Love Haters”.

Katie Vaughn, a video producer in Texas, has two choices. She can be one of many at her company to be laid off, or she can accept an assignment recommended by her supervisor, Cole. The assignment is to film a documentary featuring Tom “Hutch” Hutchinson, a coast guard rescue swimmer and local hero in the Florida Keys. Cole shares with Katie that Hutch is his estranged brother whom he refers to as a love hater.

Katie has just suffered a very public breakup with her rock star boyfriend which left her reeling with body image issues and bruised self-esteem. She decides she has nothing to lose and accepts the assignment. Arrangements are made for Katie to stay with Cole’s Aunt Rue who lives in a small community she created for herself and her widowed friends, known as “the gals”. Aunt Rue has an infectious personality and takes an immediate liking to Katie.

Katie has told a few white lies to secure the job. The most problematic is that she can’t swim. Aunt Rue tells Katie not to worry, she will have a swimming instructor swing by and give her a few lessons before filming begins. The swim instructor, turns out to be none other than Hutch.
