Today, I am recommending “Funny Story” a new adult novel by Emily Henry. Librarian Daphne loves a good story, especially reading them to the children of Waning Bay, Michigan. Her own love life however, is a story she would rather not read aloud. Her engagement to Peter was everything she had hoped for and all the plans were in place. She was joining a family she loved and fulfilling her dreams to begin marriage and eventually start a family. That is, until Peter decided he is in love with his childhood best friend, Petra.
Alone in town and without friends or family, Daphne starts a countdown. She decides she will stay in Waning Bay only until her pet project, the Library Readathon is complete. Her first order of business is to find a new place to live. She realizes the only person in town who needs a new roommate (and that could possibly relate to her tragic love story), is Miles Nowak, Petra’s ex-boyfriend. Miles is nonchalant and scruffy, seemingly able to roll along with life no matter what happens. Daphne is predictable, practical and a bit uptight. They gratefully avoid one another until one night when a little alcohol and a lot of feelings emerge of how they truly had been impacted. A plan is implemented. Why look like two rejected and pathetic exes when you can project happiness and have people suspect you are head over heels for one another?
