Check It Out: State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

This is Leah Erdmann with the Sioux City Public Library and you’re listening to Check It Out.

Today, I’m recommending State of Wonder by Ann Patchett.

I have recommended Patchett’s writing before, but I recently read another standout and can’t help but share it with you. First published in 2011, State of Wonder blends intrigue, science, and adventure to result in a fascinating story that transports readers deep into the Amazon. The tale follows Marina Singh, a pharmaceutical researcher dispatched to the Brazilian jungle to investigate her colleague’s mysterious, untimely death and uncover the progress of a revolutionary fertility drug led by her eccentric former mentor. As Marina takes the leap from her ordinary, predictable life into the rainforest, she is faced with not only the challenges of the natural world but also the ethical dilemmas of scientific discovery.

Patchett's descriptions of the Amazonian landscape paint a vivid picture of the region’s wild beauty and peril. The gracefully described wonders of nature, Marina’s mounting questions, and the seemingly countless lurking dangers create a gripping atmosphere that sustains suspense throughout the novel. Patchett doesn't shy away from exploring complex themes like mortality, culture clash, and the moral ambiguity of medical advancement, making this read both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant.

With rich characters and a subtly spiraling, well-paced plot, State of Wonder offers the immersive reading experience I have come to associate with all of Patchett’s work. It’s great for suspense seekers and armchair travelers alike.
