Sierra Club's "Beyond Coal" Campaign

SIERRA CLUB'S "BEYOND COAL" PROGRAM SPECIALISTS

Katie Rock is the Campaign Representative for Iowa with the Sierra Club’s “Beyond Coal” campaign. She will be traveling from Des Moines to take part in two different events in Sioux City on Tuesday, January 28th.

Rock talked to Siouxland Public Media’s Sheila Brummer about her thoughts on the impact of coal energy and the transition to cleaner forms of energy.

Rock’s first event is at noon at the Holiday Inn in Sioux City.  She will be sharing her mission with attendees of the Siouxland Progressive Women’s Luncheon.  That evening she will be the guest speaker at the Northwest Iowa Sierra Club’s Fourth Tuesday program at the First Unitarian Church in Sioux City.  The program starts at 6:30.

MidAmerican Energy released this state surrounding the use of coal plants:

MidAmerican Energy is a national renewable energy leader. We have committed to providing renewable energy to our Iowa customers at the equivalent of 100% of their electric use on an annual basis, and we currently project to reach that goal by the end of 2021.

In order to meet the needs of our customers – by providing reliable, affordable and increasingly renewable energy -- we must continue to rely on other sources of energy so that we continue to keep our customers’ rates low and affordable.

Our commitment to our customers and the environment is clear – we’ve reduced our coal assets by 20% since 2014 and expanded our wind fleet by 120%, while our Iowa customers enjoy the 12th lowest rates in the country.
