MIYUKI NELSON

MIYUKI “MICKEY” NELSON

I am a wife, mom, small business owner, sports mom (Little League, Basketball, Golf, Volleyball, Softball) Back Stage Dance Mom, PTA member, Girl Scout Leader, technology enthusiast, advocate for students and public education, committee member and parent volunteer.  I’m willing to work hard for what I believe in!

The catalyst that propels me to be involved in education are my two kids who attend the Sioux City Community School District.  I have taken a very active role in volunteering in my kids’ school and classrooms. As a result, I developed good relationships with teachers/staff.  Through my volunteer work, I have witnessed the joys and challenges in the classroom.  I have enjoyed the opportunity to provide tech lessons such as Lego WeDo Robotics, Ozobots, Reading Cube story-time and mini tech expo fun.

As member and former PTA treasurer, I have been instrumental in raising funds for my kid’s school and optimizing funds available to the school to enhance the educational experiences for students and teachers/staff.  (Some examples include, Lego WeDo Robotics Club, Lego Education in the classroom and I-Ready Reading Supplemental Program).  My function as a PTA treasurer has allowed for me to gain a working understanding of the needs posed by ongoing reductions in educational funding.  In my role as a board member of Sioux City Public School Foundation, I have expanded my efforts of raising funds to benefit the mission of the foundation which is to support the SCCSD in the areas of STEAM, Arts & Culture and Equity.

Due to all my hard work and dedication, I built a productive working relationship with team members of the school district.  I was invited to serve in the TAG (Talented & Gifted) programmatic review committee.  I served on the Educational Equity and District Advisory Committee. I have co-chaired and chaired the District Advisory Committee (renamed School Improvement Advisory Committee or SIAC) and a current board representative in this committee.  I serve on the Student Achievement Committee. As a community member, I’m an advocate for Early Childhood Literacy Awareness and I am actively involved in the 0-3 Prime Age to Engage Child Literacy campaign.  Through a collaboration between our district and Parents for Greater Iowa Schools, I created and established the Parent Engagement Network for SCCSD on Facebook.  The purpose of this group is to educate parents and the community on the legislative issues affecting our school district.  Also to engage them in advocacy to promote our school district and its students success.  Due to my relentless work on legislative advocacy, I was elected as the state of Iowa PTA Legislative Committee Chair.

I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology.  I worked for IBP and Tyson Foods in the Fresh Meat Division as Food Safety Coordinator, Specialist and Regional Manager of Food Safety and Quality Assurance during my 10 years employment.  My work experience allowed me to develop strong problem solving and decision-making skills.  My analytical background and love of Science drive my interest in seeing the incorporation innovation, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and career paths in the schools.  I’m a small business owner.

My experiences as a parent, volunteer, community member, scientist and businessperson provide ideal skill sets that will continue to benefit and enhance our school board.  My inquisitive personality along with my independent thinking skills will continue to be a useful and valuable asset to the school board, district and its students’ success.

As a current school board member, my skills have served to stimulate more discussion at the board table.  It has contributed to creating new goals, priorities and influenced the direction of our district.

I look forward to continuing to represent you, our district team members, the community and its students.
