According to a new report, mail service in South Dakota has gotten slower due to United States Postal Service changes.
The release of that audit report comes after word that the postal service is returning more regional services to its Sioux Falls processing facility.
The USPS moved much of its mail processing work out-of-state in 2025, which was a contributing factor to mail taking longer to arrive. Cost-cutting measures also slowed service, to a speed that is below national averages..
The report said, "These extended routing distances, combined with limited intrastate transportation links and other transportation-related changes, reduced the timeliness and reliability of delivery across South Dakota… At the same time, the Postal Service did not communicate impacts of the changes to affected communities.”
U.S. Senator Mike Rounds requested the investigation last year, and he now said it is encouraging that the USPS is acknowledging its service is not adequate.
