A member of the University of Iowa marching band has died after collapsing from the heat in Iowa City on Saturday.
The heat index surpassed 100 degrees at the game against Northern Illinois, causing the band’s halftime performance to be cancelled.
The family of Derek Phillips says he suffered cardiac arrest and was admitted to intensive care. They decided to remove Phillips from life support after learning the damage his brain was too severe for him to survive.
In a statement, the University of Iowa says the death of Phillips is “heartbreaking.” The university is providing counselors for students in the marching band and school of music.
Phillips played horn (mellophone) in the marching band. He was studying business analytics and planned to graduate in 2028.

“The entire Hawkeye Marching Band family is thinking of Derek Phillips and his loved ones. We are grateful to his parents for providing regular updates to the students who love Derek. This is heartbreaking for everyone who cares for him. The university is in close contact and is offering support. Both the HMB and School of Music have counselors on-site for students this week. HMB director Eric Bush has shared resources with the band community and is encouraging anyone who needs support to seek assistance.”
