A Salix City Council meeting set for Wednesday evening to address such topics as a possible data center moratorium has been postponed.
Salix Mayor Kevin Nelson told Siouxland Public Media News at 11 a.m., or eight hours ahead of the meeting start, that the meeting was postponed due to "death threats and terroristic threats."
Nelson said those threats were "reported to the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office this morning, and they are investigating."
At the July 8 Salix council meeting, residents asked their representatives to place a moratorium on any large-scale data centers being placed on city land. The council voted 3-2 in support of a concept of such a one-year pause.
There needs to be one more council vote to fully effectuate the moratorium.
Salix annexed about 900 acres of farmland in April for possible development. Google announced last week the company is in early early stages of evaluating the site for a data center.
At the most recent council meeting, more than 120 people packed Salix City Hall. The meeting was more than 2.5 hours, and the public forum portion alone covered 70 minutes during which 20 people spoke.
Those who spoke in support of a data center said Salix needs an economic boost.
On the flip side, people who opposed the project said a center would ruin a quaint rural lifestyle.
