The Sioux City Council approved the final reading of a traffic ordinance for utility vehicles within city limits in its meeting Monday.
During the meeting, Mayor Bob Scott clarified that the ordinance doesn’t go into effect right away. Scott suggested that the city send out a press release noting the regulation won’t go into effect until after publication in the Sioux City Journal.
During the discussion on UTVs, the city council also approved an amendment eliminating the tire’s DOT manufacturer marking requirements. Previously, the city council approved a change allowing the vehicles to be driven downtown.
Council member Craig Berenstein suggested amending the age limit, raising it from 18 to 21. Berestein said medical personnel had reached out to him, noting that there is a significant difference in brain capacity and decision-making between the ages. The motion failed.
The ordinance allows UTVs to operate on city streets, but it has limitations; they are prohibited from operating on trails, educational facilities, and public cemeteries. Additionally, vehicles are allowed in alleys and one-or two-lane streets.
People driving utility vehicles within city limits must be 18 years of age, registered with the Iowa DNR, and have a license and insurance.
