To prevent future flooding risk in the Riverside area, the Sioux City Council approved concept plans for a levee project.
According to a city memo, the Big Sioux River Levee Extension project aims to provide permanent protection by extending the left bank levee system north along River Drive.
Not only will it provide protection, but it will also eliminate the need for installing an emergency flood barrier.
The project discussed in the Monday council meeting requires the purchase and demolition of three properties, relocation of homeowners, and construction of the new levee.
A public hearing is expected to be held in 2027 to provide an update on the project's progress prior to bidding out for construction.
Funding will come in part from a grant from Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
