The Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs is beginning to work on a project involving peace poles.
According to a Monday post, the commission is working with the Rotary District 5650 and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to create peace poles.
It says poles will be placed in various locations throughout Nebraska, including Lincoln.
The post also says the poles are to recognize the legacy of the Genoa boarding school.
Thousands of Native children, including members of the Omaha, Winnebago, and Ponca tribes, were sent to the school from 1884 to 1934.
Some people have criticized the school, saying it forced indigenous children to assimilate and erased culture. Leaving children disconnected from their roots, with some never returning home.
