Seeking to prevent its broader campus area from being bisected, Bishop Heelan High School officials are asking the city of Sioux City to change plans to build a street.

During the weekly Monday meeting, the Sioux City Council members approved a resolution to set a public hearing on June 22 on the switch.

As a new Heelan High School was being built west of the prior one at 11th Street and Grandview Street, the city and Heelan officials in 2012 approved a development agreement that would lead to a new version of 11th Street being paved in a future year

In the proposed change, Heelan would purchase a vacated parcel of land west of 11th Street for $80,000. The Heelan proposal says the city would save about $900,000 by not creating the street in 2028.

In a city memo, Heelan officials believe not building the street will make the campus area safer, and allow Heelan a place for more parking near the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) building.

The original Heelan School was built in 1959, and the new version giving more expansive grounds to the west near Wesley Park Boulevard opened a decade ago.
