Early voting in the Iowa primary election began on Wednesday, but it was a pretty slow affair in Woodbury County, as measured by early in-person voting.
After about four hours at a polling place set up in the Woodbury County Courthouse, 27 people had voted. After eight hours, 42 people had voted.
Woodbury County Auditor Michelle Skaff said there will be only early voting location this month.
However, there was activity concerning the other early way to vote, by mail. May 13 is also the statewide date on which early ballots could be mailed out to people requesting them.
Skaff said 1,116 ballots had been requested and mailed.
In Iowa, people are voting on county, state and federal elective positions. The leading votegetters for each political party in the primary become the nominees for the November 2 ballot.
Primary elections typically have lower voter turnout than those held in November general elections.
The number of Woodbury County people who voted in off-year June primaries was 8,873 in 2022, and 8,471 in 2018.
Early in-person voting by law runs for 20 days in the election offices of all 99 counties , That early voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through June 1.
Skaff said she expects there will be more satellite voting sites in November, if people petition to have them.
