As the Sioux City School Board continues to consider candidates to fill the open superintendent position, people used the public comment portion of Monday’s meeting to share opinions on the topic.

Several community members spoke in support of interim superintendent Jim Vanderloo being elevated to superintendent.

One week ago, the board held a meeting regarding the available superintendent role but did not select a candidate to fill the spot, saying they could not reach a unanimous decision.

The finalists for the position were Tim Miller, Will Pickens III, and Vanderloo.

During the public comment, Vanderloo’s daughter Hanna Nikkel said Vanderloo has shown up, served, and poured himself into the school district for 34 years, adding it’s not where he works; it's what he lives.

Monique Scarlett told the school board they need to pick the candidate who can best move the district forward.

Board member Christian Supoit-Perez noted there are many people outside the school district who are applying to open positions, as they want to come to the district, and all should be fully considered.
