The Sioux City Department of Parks and Recreation announced Monday that repairs for the Sergeant Floyd Monument are starting this week.
The Sergeant Floyd Monument was built marking the burial site of Sgt. Charles Floyd, the only member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to die during their journey.
According to the city, restoration is vital to preserve the 125-year-old structure, and similar work was completed in 1998.
In a statement, Kelly Bach, parks superintendent, said the rehabilitation preserves one of Sioux City’s historic landmarks and allows future generations to enjoy.
Over the past five years, city staff has been observing and evaluating the structure to determine what is contributing to its deterioration and how serious it is.
The restoration is expected to preserve the Floyd Monument for another 25 years.
