There is concern broadly in the community about the condition of the Sioux City School District high schools, so in the near future a committee will be formed to look into options for the schools.
Interim Superintendent Jim Vanderloo told Siouxland Public Media News that any decisions concerning modernizing the existing high schools or building new ones would need to go through a very robust exploratory phase.
The West, North and East high schools were opened in 1972.
"You're talking about a lot of taxpayer dollars, one-cent sales tax dollars,” Vanderloo said.
“So our plan moving forward and it will happen in the near future, we are gonna get a committee of community members from all parts of town from all walks of life, to help us figure out what is the best approach to our three high schools.
“What should be our next step moving forward? I would expect some type of committee to be formed in the next 30 to 60 days.
“And we’ll spend most of this year (ahead) making a decision on what the next steps are. And then hopefully this time next year, we’re talking about, you know, some designs, some architects, some land.”
