A group of longtime Vermillion, South Dakota, residents have come together to create a housing development that offers a new style of living focused on community reliance and sustainability.
The model that Dakota Prairie Commons will use, is a development style called cohousing. According to South Dakota News Watch, Betty Smith, one of the founding members of cohousing in Vermillion, said such cohousing "doesn't just create houses. It creates a community.”
About 28 individual homes will surround one large common house, where community members will eat, gather and share items.
Cohousing has gained popularity across the country, and this is the first development of its kind in South Dakota.
