North Sioux City officials discussed the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Relief Action Plan in their commissioners meeting Monday.

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden announced last week the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved the grant for North Sioux City to help with flood recovery.

Jeff Dooley, city administrator of North Sioux City, said they didn’t know the grant was approved prior to the governor’s press release.

“The governor’s office of economic development never told us that, but we are glad that it's approved,” said Dooley.

There is a 45-day period in which the governor’s office of economic development must obtain certification from HUD to administer the funds.

Dooley said he anticipates the state and HUD will work on the funding agreement after January 1st.

In the meantime, he said city officials can begin discussing projects and use of the money with state officials.

The June 2024 flooding event wreaked havoc in North Sioux City, including heavy damage to many homes at McCook Lake.
