Rethinking Thanksgiving through an indigenous perspective

Ways To Subscribe

Thanksgiving is a time of year where you can reflect, spend time with family, and eat a large meal. Though the history behind it is more complex than what we are taught. My family and I already don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in a traditional way; sometimes we have tamales and pozole, sometimes we have turkey, and then we just spend the rest of the day doing nothing.

Eventually, I started to bring conversations on indigenous understanding to our time together at Thanksgiving. During this time of year I have my siblings work on projects related to indigenous history, art, or food, so we gain a better understanding of the indigenous perspective.

Today two of our guests are one of my sisters, Angelica, who is doing a project, and our other guest is Trisha Rivers, an Indigenous activist in the community giving her take on what she does with her family during Thanksgiving time.
