A recount could be coming concerning a school bond measure in Northwest Iowa that only missed passage by six votes.
Woodbury County Auditor Michelle Skaff on Thursday said resident Chad Janzen requested the recount.
Officials in the Sergeant Bluff-Luton School District have tried for many years to have a schools modernization proposal be passed by voters.
The latest on November 4 didn’t quite reach the 60 percent supermajority threshold of affirmative voting to pass.
The $37 million plan for buildings at Sergeant Bluff-Luton got 59.7 percent affirmative vote.
The election day count showed it failed, with 1,173 votes. The canvass of votes this week increased that by one to 1,174 ‘yes’ votes, which was still six votes short.
Skaff said the recount request is being reviewed. If that recount is carried out, it would have to be ordered by the Woodbury Board of Supervisors in their November 18 meeting.
A recount board that includes three members, including Janzen, plus someone designated by Skaff.
“The recount includes the same programming from the election and we will use an electronic tabulator to read and count the ballots. The Recount Board will submit a report to me that will be reviewed to determine the outcome,” Skaff said.
There was one other very narrow defeat in a school bond measure last week, as the $9 million plan at Hinton got 58.8 percent.
