Mexican Consulate sees rise in dual citizenship applications

Ways To Subscribe

The Mexican Consulate in Omaha has seen a significant increase in applications for dual citizenship.

The number of applications has nearly doubled, rising from 493 to 962 over the past year.

Currently, the approval rate for dual citizenship is 99% due to the direct support from the consulate. If there are any issues with an application or supporting documents, consulate staff will work with individuals to make any necessary corrections.

Jorge Ernesto Espejel Montes, Head of the Consulate, told Siouxland Public Media that there are 53 Mexican consulates in the United States.

Espejel Montes said he does not have access to the national total for dual citizenship applications.

He said that there are two reasons they are seeing a rise in applications for dual citizenship.

First, the Mexican government has increased outreach and education about dual citizenship, encouraging individuals to apply.

Second, the Know Your Rights program invites individuals to be prepared through dual citizenship. It gives individuals the option to return to Mexico as needed, especially in emergency or immigration-related situations.

You are eligible for dual citizenship if at least one of your parents is Mexican.
