The Sioux City Council is expected to approve a $97,000 contract award to McGill Restoration Inc. for the Sergeant Floyd Monument Repair and Restoration project at their meeting on Monday.
The monument, which is approximately 124 years old, requires restoration to preserve it for future generations. Similar work was carried out in 1997-1998.
The monument honors Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only member of the Lewis and Clark expedition to pass away during the journey.
City staff have been monitoring and assessing the monument for the past five years to determine that the needed repairs are due to the materials used and the monument’s age and not a larger issue.
The project will be funded by the Capital Improvement Program fund, which has an available balance of $161,434.
