News: SC School Board President Dan Greenwell and Sioux City Community Inclusivity Liaison Semehar Ghebrekidan will compete for an open 2-year term on the board in the next election

Eleven people have filed papers to run for a position on the sioux city school board, but the makeup of this years election slate for five seats has changed.

Late yesterday, current school board president Dan Greenwell is not running for a new four year term. He is running to fill the final two years of former member Perla Alarcon Flory’s term.

Greenwell; sent Siouxland Public Media a news a statement saying

As there were no candidate filings for the two year position. I believe the community needed to have a candidate for the position who had experience in either teaching, management, or business. Since we had none at 1pm, i decided to run for that opening”.

Greenwell will be challenged by for the two year term by Semehar Ghebrekidan, who is the community inclusivity liaison for Sioux City.

Nine candidates are running for the other four seats for a full four year term. They include:

Philip Hamman, who was selected to fill Alarcon-Flory's seat until November. Hamman taught at East High School for 37 years.

Treyla Lee is a Sioux City native who works as an adoption recruiter and has served on several professional and community boards.

Long-time resident Lance Ehmcke of Sioux City has had children in the school system.

Trisha Rivers is the Siouxland Project Director for Indigenous-led Great Plains Action Society.

Earl Miller is a small business owner and management consultant who has had children in the school system.

Jebediah Hibbs is a Navy veteran and heads The Freightliners parent volunteer group. He has a child in the district.

Marguerite "Margo" Cortez works for the Omaha Nation Public School in Macy, Nebraska. She is a West High graduate and lives in Sioux City.

Dustin Rhoades is the founder of Ability Tech Foundation.

John Meyers served on the Sioux City School Board for eight years.

The election set for November 7th.
