INTERVIEW: Racing Artist Alex Wakefield Continues His Indy 500 Journey

Gallery Forty Two

The 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 takes place on Sunday. Three years ago, Siouxland Public Media introduced you to a Sioux City-area artist who designed the program for the event called “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Unfortunately, COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 race. We wanted to follow up to see how Alex Wakefield is doing after his big artistic honor. He is still a creative force and talked to Siouxland Public Media’s Sheila Brummer as he traveled to Indianapolis to participate in an art event leading up to the race. He also predicts who might take the checked flag this weekend.

You can check out Alex’s work on the website motorart27.com. Alex’s recent masterpieces include prints of racing helmets from drivers such as Al Unser, Mario Andretti, and Rick Mears. The Indianapolis 500 starts at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday.
