UnityPoint Health acquires Mercy One Siouxland Medical Center

UnitedPoint Health acquired ownership of MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, including several of its facilities, on Monday.

Officials say there will be no changes to services provided by both organizations. However, they will evaluate services that have been paused or discontinued, with plans to potentially reintroduce or revise service offerings in the future.

UnityPoint Health Sioux City plans to keep both hospitals open.

Jane Arnold, Market President of UnityPoint Health, told Siouxland Public Media, “We feel by acquiring MercyOne Siouxland we can help keep healthcare local, community-led, and nonprofit. I believe this is what is best and right for the community, and it will allow us to create better access, stronger care, and create a healthier future for Siouxland and surrounding communities.”

Arnold also noted that while both organizations currently rely on contracted labor, the acquisition is expected to help grow their permanent staffing base and improve their ability to attract and retain team members.

Arnold also said that there is a national shortage of healthcare workers and that Siouxland is not exempt.

UnityPoint Health Sioux City employs about 1,200 individuals, and the merger will bring nearly 1,000 more employees to its workforce.

The acquisition was first announced in late May. MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center will be renamed UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s-Downtown.
