Vote

Voting continues until eight tonight for city and school board elections across the state of Iowa. New rules shorted time polls are open by one hour. Also, absentee ballots must be delivered to county auditors’ offices by eight. For people who still have a ballot they can return it to poll workers and cast one in person. Voters can check out the state secretary of state’s website to see if their ballot arrived on time. If not, they can still cast a provisional ballot at their local precinct.

In Sioux City, four candidates are vying for three open seats. Nine are running for school board for three positions.

Voters in the Sergeant Bluff-Luton District will be deciding the fate of a $12.3 million dollar levy.

The Sioux City Journal reports, four other bond issue votes failed in the past.

If passed, most of the money will be used to update and renovate the high school.

Sergeant Bluff Mayor Jon Winkel is facing a challenge from Dustin Thelander. Winkel was first elected in 2013 after staging a write-in campaign.

A northwest Iowa mayor who is running unopposed in today’s election has announced he’ll resign later this month.

Estherville Mayor Joseph May announced at yesterday’s Estherville City Council meeting that he has accepted a new job in ministry, at a health care system based in Richmond, Virginia.

Radio Iowa reports May moved to Estherville seven years ago. He was elected mayor in 2019.

If May is re-elected today, as expected, the council will have the option of filling the position by appointment or holding a special election.
