Noon Newscast 8.1.19: Train Derailment, Sioux City Shooting, New Bus Rules and More

Sioux County Sheriff's Office

An investigation is underway after train derailment last night in Sioux County.

It happened on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe track between Hull and Doon, one mile west of Highway 75 around 8:30.

The sheriff’s office says about 26 cars of the 83-car train derailed.  They posted drone video of the derailment on their Facebook page.

Railroad officials say there were no hazardous chemicals on the rail cars.

No one was hurt.

Police say an officer fired at another vehicle after it struck the officer's unmarked car during a traffic stop in Sioux City.

The officer positioned the car to block the vehicle from fleeing Wednesday night.

But the vehicle then hit the officer's car, prompting the officer to fire.

Police say the other vehicle left the scene but was soon found and the driver taken into custody.

Two passengers in the vehicle were questioned as well.

No injuries have been reported. The names of those involved haven't been released.

And, the day after the second Democratic candidate debate the wife of former Vice President Joe Biden will be in Sioux City this afternoon.

Jill Biden will be on hand to officials open Biden’s campaign office.

The Iowa State Board of Education has adopted new rules that would require lap-shoulder seat belts on all new buses bought by school districts and state-accredited nonpublic schools.

The administrative rules adopted today are still subject to legislative review.

Other safety equipment required would include one additional stop arm per bus, hand rails, exterior boarding lights and fire-resistant crash barriers between the front bus seats and the bus drivers.

Districts wouldn't have to retrofit their current fleets.

In 2018 the National Transportation Safety Board recommended lap-shoulder seat belts on all new school buses.

And, Iowa’s tax free weekend takes place tomorrow and Saturday.

No sales tax or local option sales tax will be collected on sales of an article of clothing or footwear with a sale price of less of $100.
