Nebraska Voter ID Bill Faces Opposition

Nebraska Voter ID 030317

While Iowa legislators ponder a voter ID bill, a similar measure is drawing criticism in Nebraska.  Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

The Lincoln Star Journal reports that the new proposal is in the form of a constitutional amendment that would be submitted to Nebraska voters in 2018.  If voters approved the amendment, the Legislature would determine the voter ID requirements.

Supporters at a legislative panel meeting said that the voter IDs are needed to address increasing concerns about voter fraud and participation by undocumented or illegal immigrants. Opponents argued that the requirements suppressed the votes of students, the elderly and disabled, African-Americans, and the poor, most of which are traditional Democratic constituencies.  For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
