Glass Recycling Update in Siouxland

Sioux City residents will be able to continue curbside glass recycling until January first.  City officials had set the deadline to switch over to a new recycling plan for December, but decided to wait until the first of the year.  Melissa Campbell is the environmental services analyst for Sioux City. She says there will be glass dropoff locations at three Hy Vee stores and two Fareways as well as the 20th street convenience center.

“It will be made into glass bottles or fiberglass insulation. All food and beverage containers of any color will be accepted. Glass does not have to separated by color and labels don’t have to be removed. We do ask that you remove lids put them into your recycling container.”

Campbell says that residents will soon be able to recycle other kinds of materials that would otherwise be thrown away.

Glass Recycling Process

“We’re working with Gill Hauling on adding tin foil, foil pans, bag shredded paper and plastic bags to our curbside recycling program.”

The city decided to stop curbside recycling after Gill Hauling said the broken glass was damaging their equipment and endangering their workers.
