Hundreds of containers, many carrying hazardous materials, have floated into Missouri since flooding in the upper Missouri River basin during the spring. A Missouri Department of Natural Resources officials says the agency collected more than 740 containers this year. Many are believed to be from Nebraska and Iowa. The containers range from small buckets to 500,000-gallon tanks. Many contain diesel fuel, pesticides or ammonia.

Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady will be remembered at a public service on the Drake University campus Wednesday morning.  Cady died suddenly last Friday of a heart attack at his family home in Fort Dodge.

Duane Hoffmeyer is the chief of the third judicial district in Iowa and hears cases at the Woodbury County Courthouse.  Hoffmeyer says the state budget began to affect judicial affairs, Chief Justice Cady worked to help endure the financial viability of small county courthouses.  Cady started a new initiative that allowed Woodbury County workers to help smaller courthouses cover their operations.

“And that was one of chief Justice Cady’s most recent projects was trying to solidify how some of these small, rural courthouses could remain viable.  And this is one of the ways that we are moving in that direction.

Hoffmeyer says Cady also worked hard to make sure issues like racial bias and mental illness were understood by judges.
