Woodbury County Democrats Support Nurses at MercyOne

The national weather issued a freeze warning for tonight through tomorrow morning for parts of northwest Iowa and northeast Nebraska as temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s.

Woodbury County isn’t included in the warning.

The Woodbury County Democratic Party is supporting nurses working at MercyOne as they try and settle a contract dispute with the hospital. The UFCW Local 222 has organized a candlelight vigil next Wednesday from 6 until 8 pm at the Sugar Shack near the hospital. The Democratic Party locally sent out an email asking supporters asking to take part in the candlelight vigil.

The union representing the nurses still hasn’t come up with a contract since June after 12 different negotiating sessions.  They have been working on contract extensions.

The union wants competitive wages for recruitment and retention of nursing staff.

A member of the negotiating committee and long-time nurse at MercyOne told Siouxland Public Media news in an interview this week she feels safety and care for patients have been compromised because of current conditions at the medical facility.

The union posted what appears to be an email from the CEO of MercyOne saying the company sent its best and final contract offer on Wednesday.

The University of Iowa’s Children’s Hospital will be receiving a three-million-dollar donation this afternoon.

Iowa State fan Carson King held up a sign at the Iowa/ISU game asking for beer money.
