Noon Newscast 8.9.19: Candidate Visits and President of the Iowa State Fair

Facebook- Kim Sitzmann

Presidential candidate Kamala Harris is in Siouxland this afternoon.  After a stop at the Anderson Dance Pavilion last night she’s expected in Storm Lake in about an hour.

More than 100 people showed up at the riverfront in Sioux City to hear her 3 a.m. agenda.  Those are issues keeping people up at night,  according to the U.S. Senator from California.

“How will we fight for the America we believe in?"

"So, we can solve the problems that people face every single day.”

This was a similar message she delivered in Sioux City during a visit in early July.

Harris does say the United States needs reasonable gun safety laws.  However, she says Congress lacks the courage to act on gun control.

Harris kicked off a five-day tour of Iowa in Sioux City.  She will also take the Soapbox at the Iowa State Fair tomorrow.

Pressure is mounting on another Democratic candidate for president, former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.  He’s at the bottom in polls and low on campaign cash.

Many in his home state want him to trade in his presidential bid for a run for the U.S. Senate.

However, while in Sioux City yesterday, Hickenlooper insisted his focus was on the presidential race.

Hickenlooper also traveled to Storm Lake for a schedule appearance at The Better Day Café this morning.

A new poll by Monmouth University in New Jersey shows former Vice President Joe Biden with the lead in Iowa at 28%.

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is up a dozen points from a poll done in April.  She stands at 19%.

California Senator Kamala Harris is now in third place among likely Democratic caucus goers at 11%.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders saw his support almost cut in half at 9%.

And, in fifth place South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 8%.

All the other Democratic hopefuls have 3% support or less.

And, frontrunner Joe Biden presented himself as an experienced leader who can beat Donald Trump while speaking at the Iowa State Fair.

While on the Political Soapbox he says he has what it takes to strengthen gun laws in the country following mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.

Biden has been leading in Iowa polls since before he got into the race for the Democratic nomination. Speaking at the Des Moines Register political soapbox Biden also addressed climate change.

He says the first thing he would do as president is re-join the Paris Climate Accord.

He also recalled coming to the Iowa State Fair 12 years ago and learning about wind energy.

“A lot of people out here didn’t think it was a good idea and then you started doing it, created 10,000 jobs, didn’t cause any cancer as the president says. Generated growth. Folks, we can invest. We will invest.”

Biden says he would invest 44 billion dollars in research and development for sequestering carbon.

And, this year’s Iowa State Fair kicked off yesterday.  The President of the Iowa State Fair is Dave Hoffman from Le Mars.  Hoffman has been on the fair board for 10 years representing 17 county fairs in northwest Iowa.  He spent a few minutes talking to Siouxland Public Media News about the allure and attractions at this annual event in Des Moines.
