Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to Vote on Sports Betting Tommorow

072919 404

In a couple of weeks, gamblers in Iowa can legally place bets on professional and college sporting events, according to the Sioux City Journal.

Tomorrow the  Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is likely to approve rules for sports wagering and approve license applications made by 18 of Iowa’s 19 state-regulated casinos. One of them is the Sioux City Hard Rock Casino.

Officials with the Iowa Medical Board says it’s rare for doctors to face disciplinary action like a Sioux City plastic surgeon faces.

Late last week, the board issued a news release surrounding Dr. Adam Smith of Tri-State Specialists. The board alleged Dr. Smith failed to provide appropriate care to 17 patients from December 2014 to September of 2017.

Dr. Smith faces a hearing before the board in October.

In an interview with Siouxland Public Media, Dr. Smith says he expects to be vindicated when the board hears the facts.  He did say he no longer has hospital privileges at Mercy or Unity-Point Health-St. Lukes.  He blamed the situation on a paperwork error.  A spokesperson for MercyOne says Dr. Smith doesn’t have hospital privileges, but personnel information is confidential.

The Medical Board says there are 7,000 licensed physicians in the state of Iowa and it issues about 25 disciplinary actions a year like in the case of Dr. Smith.
