Check It Out: Riley Sager

This is Jessi Wakefield with the Sioux City Public Library and you are listening to Check It Out.

Today I would like to recommend the works of modern thriller author, Riley Sager.

Sager burst on the scene in 2017 with his debut novel, Final Girls. The story follows Quincy Carpenter who ten years earlier suffered a tragedy of being the sole survivor of a movie style massacre which claimed four of her friends. In an instant, she became a member of a club no one wants to belong to—a group of similar survivors known in the press as the Final Girls. Only now in the present day, someone is going around killing all of the lone survivors of past tragedies.

In his sophomore novel, Sager delves once again into a past tragedy from which our protagonist cannot move on.  Told in flash backs, The Last Time I Lied tells the story of Emma who 15 years earlier was a camper at Camp Nightingale where one night her cabin mates snuck out at night and was never to be heard from again.  Returning years later as a counselor, Emma must face her demons to piece together what occurred, who to trust, and to finally stop blaming herself for what happened over a decade earlier.

In his most recent publication, Lock Every Door, Sager gets gothic, gargoyles and all. Young, out of work, and very newly homeless Jules Larsen thinks she has won the lottery when she somehow landed a new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew - one of Manhattan's most luxurious high-profile apartment buildings. The Bartholomew has a long storied and very mysterious history, and it doesn’t take long for Jules to realize that not everything is as it seems as she discovers that several of the building’s past apartment sitters have vanished without a trace.

Contact the Sioux City Public Library to see how you can get a copy of Riley Sager’s work and be sure to keep an eye out for his newest novel Home Before Dark which is slated to come out later this year.
