“A Photo Album of Ireland” is now on display at the Sioux City Public Museum.  The exhibit includes dozens of photos of the Irish people over more than 150 years.  Trish Lamb is the curator of the exhibit.  Lamb says photography when became accessible in the 1850s, people thought of it as a miracle, because for the first time could see an accurate representation of themselves.

“So it was kind of like the dot.com of its time, really revolutionary for people to be able to see an image of themselves, because before photography that was very much the world of the wealthy and the high status individuals.”

Lamb says she thinks the photos are powerful because they tell the stories of real people who struggled with adversity, but also enjoyed life.

“It’s really nice to try and record those democratic histories.  And that’s why I love photography because it’s so democratic and accessable.  And that’s why we wanted to make this exhibition because we wanted to celebrate the extraordinary nature of ordinary lives.”The exhibit will be on display through January 7th.
