“We need a new Commander-in-Chief.”

This week, three Democratic candidates for president stopped in Sioux City, including California Senator Kamala Harris.

“As we reflect on the Independence of our nation there is a lot of good and a lot worth fighting for.”

Harris held a town hall meeting to an overflow crowd at a church on West Fourth Street.  An estimated 350 people heard her message for America.

“It’s time to turn the page and time it’s time to write the next chapter in the history on our nation.”

Harris says President Trump has abused his power and hasn’t delivered on promises to help the middle class or improve the health care system.  She also accuses the United States Government of human rights abuse for its treatment of children in detention centers along the U.S. border.

“I know predators and there is a predator living in the White House."

Harris says she supports the biggest tax break for middle income Americans in generations.  For families making under $100,000 she would provide a credit of $6,000 with $500 delivered each month.   Money that would come from ending tax breaks for the top 1%.

“I believe the American we fight for people shouldn’t have to work more than one job to put a roof over their head or food on their table.”

Harris also supports Medicare for all, a boost in teacher wages and a ban on assault weapon from foreign countries.

“My American is an America that children should never be afraid to go to school.”

Plus, she says people need to acknowledge climate change.

“This is real business. We know if we don’t act it will be to our children’s peril.  It’s one of the reasons we need a new president in the United States.”

Harris’s popularity has grown since a strong performance during the Democratic Debate last week.  And, current polls place her in the top three for candidates in Iowa.

It’s been a busy week for candidates in Sioux City this July Fourth week.

On Wednesday, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg hosted a town hall meeting at North High School and the day before Congressman Tim Ryan of Ohio appeared at a smaller event at Hardline Coffee in downtown Sioux City.
