We recently passed the first anniversary of COVID-19 in Siouxland, Siouxland District Health confirmed the first positive case of the virus back on March 20th of 2020.

Part of our on-going coverage on the Pandemicincluding local health officials. Siouxland Public Media recently talked to The Chief Nursing Officer at Unity-Point Heath-St. Luke’s Wendy Lindley who shares details on the evolution of care and importance of wearing masks. Here is her conversation with Siouxland Public Media's Sheila Brummer.

Even though the number of hospitalizations in Sioux City has fallen by more than half in the past two weeks, one local emergency room doctor says people still need to double down to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

“It’s been very challenging with high volumes of COVID-19 patients who tend to stay in the hospital for longer periods of time and other patients as well.”

Sioux City’s two hospitals received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine today.

Nurse, Mary Jones and the Medical Director for Emergency Medicine Siouxland Dr. Joe Liewer were the first two to get their shots.  Both have worked for more than 25 years at the hospital.

Vilsack has been a longtime supporter of Biden and he campaigning for the former vice president on farm and rural issues in the 2020 presidential campaign.

The Iowa Department of Public Health is reporting an additional 99 COVID-19 deaths and an additional 2,246 confirmed cases. Some of the deaths are from earlier in the pandemic as the state's numbers undergo methodology changes. Also, COVID-19 deaths can take up to a week to be reported on the state's Coronavirus.Iowa.gov website. Siouxland District health says today there have been 103 cases added to the total case count in the last 24 hours. Woodbury County is still experiencing significant community spread of COVID-19

MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center and UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s are reaching out to the business community to ask for their help in combatting COVID-19. The hospitals say they have experienced the highest number of COVID-19 patients since the beginning of the pandemic. The hospitals are asking business owners to require employees and customers to wear a mask to help reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in our community.

And UnityPoint plans to raise the minimum hourly wage of its workers to $15 an hour.
The pay increase goes into effect in January. The employees most likely to see their pay go up as a result of this change are those who work in housekeeping, food service, nursing assistance and other clinical support roles, central supply and patient access associates, among others.


Deaths in all three Siouxland states due to complications of COVID-19 continue to climb.

Nebraska saw 62 during a 24-hour period and 2,000 additional cases.

There were almost 1,300 additional cases in South Dakota as the state moves closer to reaching the 1,000 mark for deaths.  Forty-seven more people have died from the illness, one of the highest single-day death tallies since the pandemic began.

The CDC says last week the Rushmore State had the highest per capita death rate in the nation.  There have been 995 deaths.


The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations at Sioux City’s two major medical facilities reached an all-time high on Monday. 

MercyOne and UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s are caring for a combined 102 patients, with 72 battling COVID-19 only.  The previous high was in late May when patient levels reached the mid 90s. 

Hospitalizations continued to fall in other parts of Iowa.  However, some health care officials are expressing concern that they may rise again if Thanksgiving gatherings caused additional virus spread as expected.

The number of hospitalizations due to the novel coronavirus continue to rise in Sioux City.  Siouxland District Health reported a total of 91 patients with 65 patients battling COVID-19 alone on November 13, 2020.  The two facilities are four patients away from the level experienced in late May.

Siouxland Public Media reached out to both UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s and MercyOne for comment on increases this week.

MercyOne orginally sent out the same statement released on November 2nd when there were 9% fewer patients.

Sioux City’s two hospitals are in the midst of a second surge of COVID-19.  Statewide hospitalizations hit another daily record.  Siouxland District Health reported a total of 69 patients at both facilities on Tuesday and 63 today.

The President and CEO of UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s says his facility started seeing an increase a few weeks ago after a low of one to two patients in the middle of August after a high of 43 patients in the spring.  The current rate is in the middle to upper 30s.


Hospitalizations from COVID-19 continue to rise in Iowa, hitting another daily record. 

Statewide there are 473 hospitalized, including 63 at Sioux City’s two hospitals.  That is down by a half dozen  from the day before. 

The President and CEO of UnityPoint Health St. Luke’s Lynn Wold says his facility has been seeing a second surge of patient for weeks after treating a low of one or two patients in the middle of August.


The number of hospitalizations continue to climb in Siouxland, as health officials in Sioux County ask for a mask mandate to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

On Sunday, Siouxland District Health reported 41 hospitalizations due to complications of COVID-19 at Sioux City’s two hospitals.  There are eleven more also battling a combination of medical issues for 52 patients in all.  That is 21 more in two weeks time.   


The Iowa Department of Public Health reported three additional deaths in 24 hours due to COVID-19 for a statewide total of 681 people and almost 400 additional cases.  The current total is almost 25,300 positive cases.

There were almost one dozen new cases of COVID-19 reported in Woodbury and Dakota counties on Friday for a total of 3,052 in Woodbury County and 1,751 in Dakota County.  There have been a total of 75 deaths.  There are still 113 cases in Union County and no deaths.

Health officials with Dakota County report one more person died of complications of COVID-19 for a total of 32 deaths.  Once again, information about age or gender isn’t being released.  There were two more positive cases in Dakota County for a total of 1,741.

Siouxland District Health recorded four more positive cases and no new deaths in Woodbury County  .  The number of people who died due to the coronavirus stands at 39.  The Iowa Coronavirus website shows there are now more than 3,000 positive cases in Woodbury County.


A march of solidarity took place in Sioux City this afternoon.

“I can’t breath.”

It started at Cook Park with an estimated crowd of a few hundred.

The group then peacefully walked to Sioux City Police Headquarters.

They were joined by police chief Rex Mueller and leaders from local churches and NAACP.

The Bishop of the Catholic Dioceses of Sioux City released a statement today surrounding the death of George Floyd.

On Thursday, May 28, 2020, MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center and UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s sent out a daily joint statement saying the medical centers are  providing care for 88 COVID-19 patients. Siouxland Public Media had a chance to talk to the President and CEO of UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Lynn Wold about the COVID-19 Pandemic.
