A massive fire last night killed more than 400,000 chickens at a poultry plant outside of Bloomfield, Nebraska.

Michael Foods operates the facility that produces eggs.  No employees got hurt but the fire destroyed a barn.

The National Weather service says the flames were so intense their weather satellite detected the heat more than 22,000 miles above the Earth.

Bloomfield is about 75 miles northwest of Sioux City in Knox County.

Saturday, December 14, 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of one of Sioux City’s most tragic industrial accidents. 

Siouxland Public Media’s Sheila Brummer explores the explosion of the Swift and Company Meatpacking Plant with the story of one survivor and a modern day historian who takes us back in time.

You can explore the archives of the Swift Plant explosion at the Sioux City Public Museum’s Research Center.  Public hours are Wednesday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m.  Or, you can also make an appointment.

We've got two county fairs, blues at Vangarde Arts, Samantha Fish does a show at Preservation Plaza. Also at the Lakes, legendary comedy troupe, The Second City plays Pearson Lakes Arts Center, and Okoboji Summer Theatre heads into the home stretch. Back in Sioux City it's African Night at 1st United Methodist Church.

On The Exchange, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon, on July 20th, 1969.  We talk with Dr. Todd Young, Professor of Physics and Astronomy and the director of the Fred G. Dale Planetarium at Wayne State College about the importance of the moon landing, and why the space program is so important to our future. 

We talk with some older Siouxlanders who recall watching the moon landing live on television all those years ago.
