Sioux City experienced a few close races on election day. 

Siouxland Public Media’s Sheila Brummer was there for the results.

A few dozen people and members of the media watched as results came down at the Woodbury County Courthouse on election night.

There are more than 57,000 registered voters in the county with races in 15 cities and 10 school districts.

A candlelight vigil took place Wednesday night for nurses at MercyOne who are in the middle of a contract dispute with the hospital.  

Supporters fill the parking lot of the Sugar Shack Bakery located near MercyOne Hospital.

There’s a bit of dancing.

And, speeches by local politicians, including State Senator Jackie Smith.

“This is Sioux City, we have your backs.”

Here’s City Council Member Rhonda Capron.

“If you treat your employees right they going to bring it back to you and treat you right and that’s how it works.”

Leaders of Iowa farm commodity and biofuels groups are calling on President Trump to force the EPA to follow the deal on ethanol and biodiesel that Trump struck with the industry a dozen days ago.  The leaders held a news conference today in Des Moines. 

Iowa Corn Growers Association CEO Craig Floss warned thousands of farmers who invested in ethanol and biodiesel plants will go out of business if the EPA plan stands.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says zebra mussels have been found in Crystal Lake in north-central Iowa.  The mussels attach themselves to boat motors, bait buckets, and dam mechanisms and cause damage to motors and facilities.

Boaters are urged to clean, drain and dry watercraft to prevent the spread of the mussels.

The city of Sioux City and the owner of a popular summer hangout are working together to try and come up with a resolution over a campground.

The state legislature has been in session seven weeks and a lot has happened.  Lawmakers passed the controversial Chapter 20 measure that largely ended collective bargaining for public employees in Iowa, changing the way their healthcare will be managed and might eventually affect their pension system.
