Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds provided a few more details on Thursday about requirements for school districts for in-person learning this fall.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is requiring schools to hold at least half of their core lessons in person.

Reynolds held a news conference this morning in Des Moines where she was joined by a superintendent of a small district in southeast Iowa.

COVID-19 has claimed one more life in Woodbury County.  Siouxland District Health says the victim was a middle-aged man.  This brings total number of deaths in the Sioux City metro area to 70.  There are 13 additional cases in Woodbury County for a total of 2,970 positive cases and 39 deaths.  One more death was reported in Dakota County on Thursday. 

The Iowa Department of Public Health’s website showed three more deaths during a 24 hour periods that ended at 10 a.m.   There have been 641 deaths statewide.  There were almost 400 new cases recorded in one day as well.

There have been three nights of violence in Des Moines over the police murder of George Floyd of Minneapolis  At a news conference this afternoon, Gov. Reynolds also supported the decision to set a curfew of 9:00 p.m. for Polk County tonight said she wanted to work with advocates for social justice to prevent more tragic deaths.  

Reynolds today said she was working with the NAACP to change the criminal justice system to reduce racism and violence to African Americans.

Sioux City Pipeline Protest

Large numbers of protesters continue to gather in North Dakota to oppose the Dakota Access pipeline. However, today in Downton Sioux City, a small group of protestors urged passersby to think twice about the 3.8 billion dollar project.  Siouxland Public Media Mary Hartnett has this report

An Iowa lawmaker has a few words of advice to public universities providing counseling to emotionally distressed students in the wake of last week’s presidential election. Sioux land Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has more.

Republican Bobby Kaufman’s “suck it up, buttercup bill” is aimed at state universities that use extra taxpayer dollars to fund election-related sit-ins and grief counseling.  The Wilton lawmaker told the Des Moines Register Monday that “People have the right to be hysterical … on their own time.”
